Make a unique and customized gift bag for the same 2$ you spend for buying it.
This is a simple and fun sewing project. All you need is 5 felt fabric pieces (you get 4 pieces for 1$ at any craft store), Hot glue gun, Sewing needle, Thread, Scissors and Sewing machine (optional if you could hand sew).
Trace a circle using lids or cups in your kitchen on to a paper. Draw a spiral in the circle and cut just the outer circle.
Use the pre cut paper circle with spiral as a guide to cut your felt piece.
To form a flower, roll the cut felt spiral from outside edge to inside center. When you reach the inner end secure the flower with hot glue ( if you don't have hot glue gun, you can even sew with needle and thread.)
Hand sew straight or curved lines (as stems) on one of the felt pieces using needle and thread (for the bag front).
Stick your flowers on the stems using hot glue.
Cut 2 inch wide and about 10 inch long strips to make bag handles. As shown in above picture along the width fold edges inwards and stitch to reinforce the handles. (You will need half of the felt fabric piece for this step)
Sew the sides of the bags to bottom piece. (I used the other half felt fabric piece that was remaining after making handles as bag bottom. And one of the grey fabric pieces was cut into 2 to form narrow sides of the bag.)
Sew each side edge to adjacent side edge as shown in pictures. Add and sew the handles and you are done.
Now, turn the bag inside out and there you have it! Pretty handmade gift bag for your lovely gifts ;)
I leave it to your imagination to get creative with your bag design. This is what I came up with.
A small note, if you want to place heavy items in the bag I would suggest using a fabric other than felt.

ReplyDeleteThank you so much. I m glad you liked them. I love your blog too. You have awesome bags. I wish I can get there soon :)
DeleteThis is a beautiful bag! More beautiful and with certainly a lot more texture than those paper bags we can buy. And such a bag can be reused to store things afterward. Thank you for this tutorial. I read it and I should take a few hours to make a few. As I often seem to look for a bag for a last minute gift, I really should make a few in advance... ;-) Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteI also love the fact that its reusable :) Thank you :) I will be very happy to see your bags soon :)
